How to Start a Fiber Supplement

The most common complaint about fiber supplements in owner comments is gas and bloating in the first weeks. Here is what people describe doing, alongside what NIH sources say.

Start low, go slow

Fermentable fibers can cause gas at first, and most studies start at a few grams a day.[PubMed] Owners commonly describe starting with a quarter or half dose and increasing every few days.

Drink enough water

MedlinePlus advises at least 8 ounces (240 mL) of liquid with each psyllium dose.[MedlinePlus] MedlinePlus also says to tell your doctor first if you have ever had intestinal blockage or difficulty swallowing.[MedlinePlus]

Space it from medicines

MedlinePlus lists keeping some medicines (digoxin, aspirin and nitrofurantoin) at least 3 hours apart from psyllium.[MedlinePlus] Ask a pharmacist about your own medicines.

Pick a gentler fiber if bloating persists

Among the fibers we track, the share of rated owner comments describing unwanted effects was: Psyllium husk 9%, PHGG (Sunfiber) 9%, Inulin / FOS 11%, Acacia fiber 11%, Wheat dextrin (Benefiber) 9%.

The NIDDK lists more fiber and fiber supplements among the options for constipation.[NIDDK] If constipation is new, severe or comes with other symptoms, see a doctor first.
